1. (in Japan) a young person who is obsessed with computers or particular aspects of popular culture to the detriment of their social skills.

In the US, an Otaku is better known as a geek. The definition is the same, but I don't think you necessarily need to be young or sacrifice your social life. Otaku is a state of mind, an unconventional hobby
